2018: Year In Review | Pflugerville Boudoir Photography

It’s that time again…time to review my year.

At the beginning of the year, I met up with a few fellow local photographers to make some 2018 goals mood boards. As silly as it seems, making that goal board really helped ramp me up for the year. #manifest

My First Cruise

I am proud to say that I took my family on our first cruise. We went to Merida (Progreso), Mexico on the Royal Caribbean. It was so nice!

Vegas, Baby!

As a thank you gift for my beauty team, I took them all to Vegas in February. We had a great time and while there, we hired the incredible Jennifer Tallerico to do an underwater boudoir session. It was such an amazing & unforgettable experience.

I also got to meet up with my besties, Jen & Tamara, for lunch at Hell’s Kitchen. Yum!

Studio Opening

I opened my very own boudoir studio this year. It’s the most perfect space & exactly what we needed. We moved in and immediately started the renovations. Lauren helped every step of the way, coming over before & after working at the Brow Bar at Ulta and also brought along her incredible friend, Alejandro. Alejandro was a hair stylist at Ulta who quickly became my part-time handyman. Ha! He’d never done any type of renovation work, but jumped right in and helped paint, installed a couple of chandeliers, replaced electrical outlets, blew and replaced a breaker. Just everything I needed done — he did it.

Even my sweet little ones, Utah & Ani, got involved.

Even my besties, “The Backseat Cookies”, took a weekend off and flew/drove in to help! Thank you times a million Jen & Tamara!

We worked so hard, day & night. Finally, the dream became a reality and the studio is completely complete – including an incredible outdoor boho space.

Not only did Alejandro help massively in the renovations of our studio, he also became a member of my beauty team for a few months.

Male Boudoir

Alejandro also obliged when I asked (begged) to photograph him.

Camp Do More

So, there’s this yearly adult summer camp specifically designed for boudoir photographers. It’s located at an actual summer camp and it’s BEAUTIFUL! I went to help assist my best friend, Jen Swedhin, at her male boudoir workshop called “Men By Jen”, and also to man her client gifts booth, Jen Gets Shit Done.

While at camp, I modeled again for the workshop by Teri Hofford & Lindsay Rae, called “Confident Curves”. It was so.much.fun. Per usual. I modeled for the same workshop in Vegas last year as well.

I was lucky enough to be shot by my very dear friend, the incredible Emily Scott Pack. I love my photos so much.

I saw old friends & met some really lovely people that will be life-long friends for sure. I look very forward to seeing them next year at camp again!

After camp, Jen and I had an extra day to relax, hang out & explore Toronto. We checked out the Banksy exhibit and it was fucking incredible.

My family & I took a family vacation to Michigan over the 4th of July. It was Ani’s first time on an airplane (she had just turned 2) and it was the time that we decided on our flight home that we would never travel with her again…or we’d at least wait until she is 5 years old. Haha! It was rough, but overall we had a great time. I’m always reminded that when you travel with kids…it’s not really a “vacation”.

While in Michigan, I set up a boudoir shoot for my friend Trista and an impromptu outdoor boudoir session with my cousin, Casey. Both went splendidly & I absolutely adore their photos. They are honestly some of my favorites I’ve ever shot.

I love Trista’s because they were shot in my grandma’s old house. I have so many memories in that house, and now this one too.

Trista offered her land to shoot on and I ran with it. I called my cousin, Casey, and basically told her she’d be getting naked, outside…and she’d be in front of my camera. Ha! Her response was simply, “When & where?”

Body Image Bootcamp

I went to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico in October to attend a workshop by my friend Teri Hofford called “Body Image Bootcamp“. To say it was COMPLETELY LIFE CHANGING would be the understatement of the year.

It was magical and intense, and scary and beautiful and heart wrenching and hilarious and deeply healing. It was EVERYTHING, you guys.

I haven’t spoken about it publicly, but my personal life this year, specifically my extended family life, has been in shambles. After a heartbreaking falling out with my mom back in February, we are now slowly picking up the pieces. She is a part of my life again. It’s different and will never be the same, I’m afraid…but it’s on it’s way to being okay and that’s all I need at this point.

At the same time, my parents relationship has also been suffering incredibly. They are officially separated and who knows if a divorce is going to happen.

Having your parents divorce as an adult is still really heartbreaking. I’ve found it especially hard because I have my own babies that I have to explain it all to. And it’s fucking confusing. So I struggle, and I try my best. That’s all I can do.

The Body Image Bootcamp came at exactly the right time in my life. I needed soul searching and healing. And time away from it all. The stress I had been under had become so bad that I didn’t get my period for 6 months. My doctor eventually put me on birth control pills just to regulate it by force. It’s been intense.

I tried a few different medications for stress & anxiety, but those gave me some yucky side effects – headaches, nausea & lack of sex drive. I stopped and eventually things seemed to even out a bit. I think I just needed time.

I will remember my experience in Mexico with this INCREDIBLE group of women forever and I will cherish those memories always. I truly think the experience and these ladies saved me, in a lot of ways, and I will be forever thankful to them.

I’ll especially be thankful to Teri for putting this workshop together. Words can’t express how much it meant to me.

I can’t wait to be at that same magical Mexican mansion, with that same group of wonderful women next October. I’m counting down the days.

I ordered a large piece of wall art for my bathroom at home of us bootcampers and my little one, Ani, just loves it.

Goodbye 2018!

There were a lot of really great things that came out of 2018, but I’m honestly so ready for it to end and for the next year to start.

Merry (belated) Christmas & Happy New Year, y’all! Let’s kick 2019’s ass! Okay?!
